All players must have full eligibility and there can be no separate junior varsity or freshman scrimmages. Controlled Scrimmage RulesĮach basketball playing school may, after five (5) days of practice and no later than two (2) days prior to the first scheduled game, choose to participate in an inter-school controlled scrimmage. A team can scrimmage five days after the start of practice and is permitted to do so until two days before the start of the regular season. The IHSAA has also set standards for pre-season scrimmaging, stating that a team has a specific time window to participate. Instant replay is only permitted at the end of the game in order to ensure a quick pace of play. Referees are able to utilize the instant replay to determine if end-of-game shots count and if they are worth two or three points. Instant replay can be used during the state tournament at the end of the season. Athletes are not permitted to accept awards designating them as 'All-State' or 'All-American.' Recruiting is also prohibited. This includes awards with names of businesses or corporate sponsors. Strict rules prohibiting athletes accepting money or merchandise from athletic participation are also in place. Prior to the start of practice, an athlete wishing to participate in basketball must pass a physical. A player cannot participate as a member of a similar team during the same season.
